The scope and intensity of disturbance by such agents as fire, insects, diseases, air pollution, and weather in pacific northwest forests suggests that forest health has declined in recent years in many areas. The most significant disturbances and causes of tree mortality or decline in oregon and washington are presented and illustrated.

Oregon wildfires threatened several communities late last summer, destroyed more than 4,000 homes, filled the air with thick smoke for days and burned more than 1 million acres, the second-highest.
